The Argentine Dogo was created by Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez and is the only internationally recognized dog breed of Argentina. Starting in the 1920's with The Old Fighting Dog of Cordoba ( a mixture of Spanish Mastiff, Bulldog, Bull Terrier and Boxer). bred solely for fighting, Dr. Martinez added nine more breeds to this already existing mixture; wanting to create a hunting breed capable of matching the game of South America....the wild boar, fox puma jaguar and cougar.
These 10 breeds, with the Cordoba Dog as a base, were all added because of their wanted traits. The Cordoba Dog had the strength, courage, and tenacity wanted. The Great Dane was added to increase height, the English Bulldog for its ample chest and boldness, the Bull Terrier for their fearlessness and endurance, the Pointer for its scenting ability, The Dogue De Bordeaux contributed its powerful jaws, the Great Pyrenees for his white coat and climate adaptabilities, the Irish Wolfhound added swiftness and hunting instinct, the Boxer for its gentleness and intelligence and the Spanish Mastiff for its added size and shear power.
In 1947, after 20 years of rigorous breeding and selection, Dr. Martinez introduced the breed standard to the world via the Argentine magazine "Diana". In 1964 the Dogo Argentino was recognized by the Argentina Rural Society and the Cinologic Federation of Argentina. The Argentina Kennel Club, a member of the Federation Cynologique International (FCI) recognized the breed on July 31, 1976.
Today's Dogo is a tough, versatile and highly intelligent. It is seen worldwide as one of the most capable large game hunters, as well as impressing many with its accomplishments in Schutzhund, French Ring Sport, police work, search and rescue and success in a gamut of other areas. Dogos have proved to be loyal companions and natural guardians of master and home. They have a quiet presence and are gentle and attentive to their family. If, however, the home or family should be become threatened, the Dogo will not hesitate to defend with their whole being.
We love the many attributes of this grand breed and our own family knows the feeling of security and well being under the watchful eye of so great a dog!
